Stonewall dinner will be a Pride event this year
by Lycette Nelson Cincinnati-Stonewall Cincinnati's annual dinner is being held as a Pride event for the first time ever this year, with the theme "Pride in Who We Are, Strength in Unity."
The dinner will take place at the Cincinnati Convention Center on June 27, with a members' reception starting at 6 pm, cocktails for those not attending the reception at 7 pm, and dinner at 8 pm.
Stonewall is honored and excited to bring New York Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center public policy director Carmen Vazquez-a frequent speaker at national glbt conferences-to Cincinnati as keynote speaker for the dinner. The title of her talk is "Gay Heaven."
In addition to overseeing the New York center's education and advocacy work, Vazquez is the national co-director for Promote the Vote America, the National Association of Lesbian and Gay Community Centers' voter registration and mobilization project.
Vazquez was born in Puerto Rico, grew up in Harlem, and lived and worked in San Francisco for 19 years before returning to New York.

Stonewall will honor two local advocates with its Community Service Awards: Alphonse Gerhardstein and Diane Torrance.
Gerhardstein, of Laufman, Rauh and Gerhardstein, has worked tirelessly for the last four years to fight for the civil rights of all by litigating to overturn Cincinnati's anti-gay Issue 3. While known to the glbt community for his work on Issue 3, Gerhardstien has also fought numerous challenges to laws restricting a woman's right to choose and was involved in the mediation process that resulted in the proposal for a civilian review board for the Cincinnati police.
The second Community Service Award goes to Diane Torrance, who left the board of Stonewall in April after three years to give more time to her academic pursuits.

Enjoy a night of music and moonlight on the river
by David Hughes
Cincinnati—On Friday night, June 12, the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Cincinnati will sponsor its annual Pride Month river cruise on the Ohio River.
This event is always great fun, mixing all elements of our diverse community together for an evening of music, dancing, and moonlight. DJ Lori Morgan will be spinning all your favorite records this year, and we will be raffling off prizes, including tickets to Pride Night '98 in September at Paramount's Kings Island.
Boarding begins at 10:30 pm, with departure from BB Riverboats at Covington Landing by 11 pm (call 606-261-8500 for directions).
The river cruise always features great views of the Cincinnati skyline, and now the Kentucky riverfront is developing as well. If the weather cooperates, you'll also see the rolling hills of southwest Ohio and northern Kentucky under the twinkling stars.

Tickets for the cruise are $20; $18 for center members. Call 513-651-0040 for info on advance ticket sales, or purchase them at the boat. This is one of the largest fundraisers for the Cincinnati Gay and Lesbian Center, which depends on these events to fund basic operational expenses such as rent and utilities throughout the year. Your support is encouraged and appreciated.

the rights of transgendered people. It was Torrance who put the "t" in glbt for Stonewall: Her work with the organization resulted in a change to our mission statement and policies to make them transgender-inclusive. She is a frequent presenter for Stonewall's speakers bureau, and has educated innumerable members of our community about transgender issues.
She has gone on to national renown: Torrance was a presenter at the Out and Equal Conference in Rochester, N.Y., in April.
The Stonewall dinner will also feature entertainment, raffles, a silent auction, coffee, and dessert bar. Dancing at the Dock nightclub will follow, starting at 11, with shuttle service between the Convention Center and the Dock.
The ticket party will take place June 7 at 6 pm at the Community Center, 214 E. 9th St. For ticket information, call the ticket hotline at 513-956-8557. For general information, call 513-651-2500.
·
If you become a Stonewall member or renew during the month of June, you'll be eligible to enter a drawing for a large prize at the dinner (and attend the members' reception). Watch for Stonewall membership organizers at Pride events or call the office to join. If you haven't joined by June 27, you can do it that night. Your membership supports Stonewall's anti-discrimination, advocacy, education, and ✓ outreach work.
